1000 Books Before Kindergarten
Give Your Child a Head Start with 1000 Books Before Kindergarten!
Welcome to the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program at Western District Library! This nationwide initiative is designed to help parents and caregivers build strong early literacy skills in their children before they start school. By reading together, you’ll not only prepare your child for kindergarten but also create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Who Can Participate?
The “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program is open to all children from birth until they begin kindergarten. Whether your child is just starting to explore books or already has a few favorites, this program is a wonderful way to encourage a love of reading from a young age.
How Does It Work?
Participating in the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program is easy and rewarding! Here’s how you can get started:
-
Sign Up at the Library: Visit Western District Library to register your child for the program. Our staff will provide you with a special reading log to track the books you read together.
-
Start Reading: Begin reading books with your child and log each one in your reading log. Remember—re-reading the same book counts, so feel free to enjoy your child’s favorite stories again and again!
-
Celebrate Milestones: For every 100 books you read, bring your reading log to the library to receive a special reward. These small incentives will keep your child excited and motivated as you work toward your goal.
-
Reach 1000 Books: Once you’ve read 1,000 books, your child will receive a certificate of achievement, and we’ll celebrate their accomplishment with special recognition at the library.
Why Participate?
Reading aloud to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare them for school. Here’s why joining the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program is a great idea:
-
Build Early Literacy: Reading together helps develop language skills, vocabulary, and comprehension—key elements for academic success.
-
Create Strong Bonds: Sharing books is a wonderful way to bond with your child and create lasting memories.
-
Foster a Love of Reading: By exposing your child to a wide variety of books, you’ll help them develop a lifelong love of reading.
-
Prepare for School: Children who are read to regularly are better equipped to succeed when they start school.
